Legendary entertainer BARRY HUMPHRIES - whose alter egos have brought him international acclaim and made him a star around the globe - is to embark on a Farewell Tour of the UK from Autumn 2013. Barry Humphries Farewell Tour will come to Wales Millennium Centre on 30 October – 2 November 2013.
EAT PRAY LAUGH! will give audiences across the country the chance to bid farewell to Humphries, arguably Australia’s greatest entertainment export, and his unforgettable characters: the Honorable Sir Les Patterson, Sandy Stone and, of course, the iconic Dame Edna Everage.
EAT PRAY LAUGH! will open at the Milton Keynes Theatre on Wednesday 23rd October and play Cardiff and Edinburgh, before transferring to London for a West End season over Christmas 2013.
Prior to her visit to Wales, Dame Edna said "Hello Possums! I'm coming to rediscover my Celtic routes. In fact I think I lived in Cardiff in a former life when my ancestors were ancient Celtic royalty and the Bassey family were working for us in a Downton Abbey situation. I've always loved leeks, which are really Welsh gladioli when you think about it and Prince Charles is very keen for me to go to Wales and tell him what it's like. Quite frankly I can't wait to see you all. It is my Farewell Tour and I want as many little Welsh folk as possible to come and kiss me goodbye. I've missed you Possums, don't miss me!"
Dame Edna is one of the greatest stars of the last 50 years - the “housewife superstar” has played the West End and Broadway on numerous occasions, performing to packed theatres including the Royal Albert Hall at the “Last Night of the Poms", as well as countless performances for the Royal Family; has television credits including the legendary UK special “A Night on Mt. Edna” as well as her own innovative chat show “The Dame Edna Experience”; and has played to sold-out audiences around the world.
Act One of EAT PRAY LAUGH! features gentle, grandfatherly Sandy Stone and the inebriated cultural attaché Sir Les Patterson - this serves as “just a bit of foreplay really before I make an orgasmic appearance in Act Two”, Dame Edna says!
Surrounded by spectacular sets and dancers, Dame Edna promises to “empower” audiences as she meditates on the big issues of gender, ethnicity and climate change.
Humphries has already taken his final bow to audiences throughout Australia where, due to extraordinary demand for tickets to see the iconic performer, satirist, artist and comedian, further performances were added across the tour.
This brand new show is directed by award-winning Australian theatre director Simon Phillips, who directed the original Priscilla Queen of the Desert, with design by Tony Award-winning Brian Thomson, who designed the original Australian and London productions of Jesus Christ Superstar and The Rocky Horror Show, as well as the closing ceremony of the Sydney Olympic Games.
Barry Humphries Farewell Tour EAT PLAY LAUGH! comes to Wales Millennium Centre on 30 October – 2 November 2013. Tickets range from £20 to £47.50. To book tickets or for further information visit www.wmc.org.uk or call 02920 63 6464.
