Garages, motor mechanics and cycle shops are still keeping the nation going – although not travelling far – so here’s a picture of a motor and bicycle repair and sales in Monmouth in about 1910.
Fred Bevington the owner is the tall moustachioed gentleman in the doorway who might well look pleased as apparently he had just sold the car in the photograph to the man on the right.

The car is a “Star” made at Wolverhampton. The Star Motor Company was active from 1898-1932 and at its peak was the sixth largest car manufacturer in the UK producing about 1000 cars a year.
Like many other early car makers the company was begun as a cycle manufacturer. Selling and repairing bikes and cars obviously continued hand in hand as Bevington’s clearly shows. The premises was at no 23 St Thomas’ Square at this date, although Mr Bevington later moved his garage to Monnow Street.
