Boris Johnson’s mother, Charlotte Johnson Wahl, has died at the age of 79.
Mrs Johnson Wahl died peacefully in her sleep at St Mary’s Hospital in London, which was made public in a notice in the Times newspaper.
She married Stanley Johnson in 1963 before continuing in her studies reading English at Oxford University, becoming the first married female undergraduate at her college Lady Margaret Hall.
The couple had four children, including Boris, and then later divorced in 1979.
In 1988, she married Nicholas Wahl, an American professor, and moved to New York.
She was later diagnosed with Parkinson’s at the age of 40.
Mrs Johnson Wahl also made her name as a painter, with the likes of Joanna Lumley, Jilly Cooper and Simon Jenkins being her subjects.
Condolences have been sent from many senior figures across the political spectrum.
Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer tweeted: “I'm very sorry to learn of the prime minister's loss. My condolences to him and his family."
