THIS photograph is of the Beniams family and is taken from an article in the ‘Waterways’ magazine from February 1961.
Mr Beniams worked the Pontnewydd section of the Monmouthshire-Brecon canal for more than 50 years and the family lived in Canal Cottage there all that time.
The photograph shows Mrs Elizabeth Beniams (right) with her son Tom and his wife Winifred sat on the cottage wall, their daughter Janet with her baby son Ian and their dog Lady.
A copy of the magazine along with other ephemera has been loaned to the museum for its ‘Bridges, Barges and Boatmen’ exhibition by the Williams family of Pontypool whose grandfather, Tom Williams, was the canal warden for the Pontymoile stretch of the canal from the 1950s to 1971 and lived in Junction Cottage.
Nostalgia is provided by Torfaen Museum.
