TWO people have been arrested and released on police bail, following a fire which caused extensive damage to council offices and the Central Kaff youth centre, at Hanbury House in Welsh Street.

Police said a woman was arrested in the early hours of the morning following the fire, on September 28, and a man at 2pm later that day.

Both were released on police bail, pending further inquiries.

Central Kaff is a special drop-in centre where young people in Chepstow can get advice on a wide range of lifestyle issues.

Organised by the council's Youth Service, Central Kaff also provides young people with free internet access, electronic games, and a safe place in which they could relax.

A spokesperson for Monmouthshire's Youth Service said: "Obviously our services to young people in the area are going to be limited for the time being.

"However, we are currently looking for alternative premises, on a short term basis, in which we can continue to meet and support young people in the town.

"Of course, young people can still access our youth service for advice on a wide range of subjects by telephoning 01291 673937."

Because of the fire the council's social and housing services office at Hanbury House in Welsh Street will be closed for the immediate future.

Anyone needing to contact the council's Children's Services should telephone the offices based at Newbridge House, Abergavenny on 01873 735900.

Similarly anyone needing to contact Community Care Services should telephone the office at Hightrees, Chepstow on 01291 635703.

According to the council's surveyor, Central Kaff received severe damage from the fire and some demolition could be required before repairs are undertaken.

The exact costs of repairing the cafe and the adjacent offices are expected to be "significant".
