Welsh League Division Three
Goytre 4 Troedyrhiw 2
GOYTRE chairman and former manager Paul Greenhalgh drew a sigh of relief after Saturday's win over Troedyrhiw - the club's first league victory since way back in August, when they beat Tillery 2-1.
Greenhalgh admitted it was a must win game for the Plough Road club, after a barren run saw them pick up just three points from seven games. The victory, though, pushes them back into the safety zone (11th) and in prime contention for a good run of results.
"It was a much-needed win. We have been kicking at the door for some time, I thought we would get something out of this game. It speaks volumes of the side that we scored four goals, you don't see that regularly in the Welsh league," praised Greenhalgh.
Goytre were 1-0 down after just five minutes, keeper Richie Minor was powerless to stop a blistering shot from outside the box.
They hit back, though, in the 25th minute with a sweetly taken free kick from striker Craig Jolliffe.
He got his second after the break beating the off-side trap, before Steve Collett scored the goal of the game. Latching onto a Jolliffe pass, he raced up field, dummied his way past the keeper and coolly slotted the ball home.
Fans got a little sweaty when Troedyrhiw made it 3-2, thanks to an Andy Walsh own goal, but the striker made amends when he scored after Justin Evans unhinged the opposition before squaring the ball to his teammate. Goytre now boast the fourth best strike record in the division.
Goytre have no game this weekend because of the Wales/Serbia international and Greenhalgh admits he'd rather it if they did.
"It's a pity we do not have a game this weekend. We would have liked to get straight back into it. Confidence is high and the boys are in the right frame of mind so it would have suited us, but there you go.
"We have only one aim this season and that is to stay in the Welsh League. We just want to consolidate our position and get used to Welsh League football."
