Abercarn 25 Abergavenny 20
ABERGAVENNY caretaker coach, Steve Hamer, is adamant his side will not be locked in a relegation fight at the end of the season.
The former Abergavenny player reckons, with the right man in charge, they would have won all of their four league games so far.
"It is a bad start, but we have all the skills and players, we just need that little something to get it right - a coach. We should have won every game so far, we've just missed a coach to help us achieve that," insisted Hamer.
He went on: "It's coming. Confidence is up, we have a good squad and it will come. "We will not get stuck in a relegation fight. My feeling is we have the best players in the league. We are on a poor run, but we will get it sorted.
"If we keep putting the work in, it will come together. We just need that one win to turn us around and get us back on track. We need that bit of guidance. We have some things going and hopefully a coach will be sorted in the near future."
Abergavenny produced four tries on Saturday, and if the wind had worked in their favour, they might have just nipped the result.
"First half we played against the elements with a big wind and went in at half-time scoring tries and just a few points behind.
"What happens in the second half? The wind drops. There was a little lack of experience to blame when we let them in a couple of times, but we stuck at it throughout and the boys we're very disappointed to come out on the losing end."
Two of Abergavenny tries came from interceptions, the best falling to fly half James Didcote who sprinted half of the pitch for his score.
Full back Geriant Pritchard also scored when he poached the ball near the end of time, while scrum half Richard McCormac scored the best try of the game, thanks to a class Stuart Davies break.
Other players who stood out on Saturday were lock Lee Oakey who played out of position at flanker, Hooker Gareth Williams who Hamer described as one of the club's most consistent players, and loose head Howard Davies who's experience proved vital in the front row.
The result leaves them third off bottom ahead of Pontypool United and Llanhilleth, with everything to play for this Saturday at home to Cwmbran.
"Cwmbran lost on Saturday and we should be looking to win. The boys certainly deserve the three points," said Hamer.
Abergavenny play at home this Saturday against Cwmbran, kick off 2.30pm.
