ABERGAVENNY RFC team manager Steve Hamer has admitted the club desperately needs a new coach to come in and fill the void left by the recently resigned Mark Williams.

Hamer, who has taken temporary control of the Bailey Park first team, said he was not the man for the role.

"I'm no coach, but I'm doing my best. It's very difficult trying to do both roles - managing the boys and coaching them at the same time.

"We have the ability, what we need now is a coach to come in and pinpoint the players' roles and get the full game plan in place," said Hamer.

The one-time Abergaven-ny flanker, who is hoping to make a return to first team rugby soon, also revealed the club is seriously short of front row players - particularly tight head props. And that, he says, is doing the club's second team no good at all.

"We've got plenty of boys turning up to training, but we're short of a front row and that's having a knock on effect on our Quins side.

I want to see both sides playing, but we're having to cancel the Quins games because we've had to take some of their front row to fill ours.

"At the moment we just don't have any young players coming through to fill that role, so we're having to rely on the older heads and Quins, which isn't ideal or fair," admitted Hamer, clearly longing to see a turn around in the club's fortunes.

Speaking on Saturday's gutsy display away at Pill Harriers Hamer added: "Our lineout went a bit disappointing. Our backs, though, did look quite sharp, but Pill were always on the gain line.

"There were a couple of occasions, though, when our youngsters did show a lot of promise. "I think we have to be relatively pleased with the result, but we know we can do better.

"We started the match in second gear and despite getting the early try we just seemed to be slow to get going.

"The second try (scored by scrum half Rob MacCormack) was thanks to some good backline running. which proved my point that we can play.

"The big problem on Saturday was that we were just not firing on all cylinders."

Abergavenny should welcome back captain and backrow forward James Williams for this Saturday's game at home to Llanishen.

The number eight suffered a gash near his eye in training, so it meant he had to miss the Pill Harriers defeat.

"Double-tryscorer, Rob McCormack, deputised as captain for him.

'We're going in blind into a lot of the games this season because of the new league structure. That means there is much more emphasis on us playing to the best of our abilities," concluded Hamer ahead of the match.

Abergavenny kick-off at home to Llanishen at 2.30pm.
