VILLAGERS in Mathern soaked up the sunshine and the carnival atmosphere on Saturday when the annual fete and procession got into full swing.

The fun started with the Great Mathern Mile race through the village, won this year by local resident Mike Wooley.

Carnival queen Charlotte Downs, age 13, and her attendants Rhianon Llewelyn, 6, and Ophelia Xerri, age 7, then led the carnival procession.

Over 25 people in fancy dress took part in the parade this year and the winning prize for the best costume went to five-year-old William Davies-King.

Hundreds of people visited Mathern on Saturday to take part in the festivities and organisers say it was their best village fete yet.

Winford Davies, one of the fete organisers, said: "It was a tremendous success and it was followed in the evening by a disco which was also well attended.

'From start to finish, it was a really enjoyable day."
