A round-up of Thornwell Red and White's first three league games this season.
Thornwell 6 v 0 New Inn
A goal straight from the kick off by Simon Lewis gave Thornwell the perfect start in this Gwent County encounter. Thornwell came to terms much better with the windy conditions, keeping the ball on the ground with the mid field players Woodward, Taylor and Wilson playing neat interchange passes feeding the front players with goal scoring chances, Vidler and Griffiths both having several near misses. But the New Inn defence cracked twice again just before half time. Firstly a Lewis pass found Vidler who laid into Griffiths' path - 2 nil. Then Steve Griffiths latched onto a Bettson ball and found Vidler, who made it 3 nil.
Half Time: Thornwell 3 New Inn 0.
Just minutes into the second half Vidler ran onto a clever flick to beat the keeper easily from 10 yards - 4 nil. Thornwell were well on top at this stage of the match. Simon Lewis made it 5 nil with a penalty.
Full back Gareth finished it off with a fine goal - 6 nil. This was a really outstanding performance from the Thornwell team, whose aim is to play attacking football both home and away.
Race 3 v Thornwell R/W 3
A truly outstanding game of football between two closely matched sides, both with fast forwards. Thornwell had to fight back 3 times to earn a draw. Race opened the scoring with a cleverly taken volley across the keeper. Thornwell drew level when a Stevie Griffiths free kick was headed home by Kenny Vidler. Following more near misses by both sides Race took the lead again when a lucky bounce went their way. Thornwell hit right back when a David Taylor long ball found Vidler who lobbed the Race keeper from 15 yards.
Then a Steve Griffiths run in which he beat three defenders in a dazzling run before blasting a shot past the Race keeper. Even the referee clapped at the end of the game.
F C Dugout 0 v 3 Thornwell
Thornwell carried off their good start to the season with an easy victory with goals from Stevie Griffiths, Simon and Alec. Credit must also go to F C Dugout who never game up a lost cause.
