Under 11 Tournament - King George V Fields Swansea
Following their recent success in Abergavenny the Under 11 squad headed with confidence to Swansea on Sunday. In their group they were to play Cardiff, Whitchurch, Llanishen/Caerphilly and a strong Penarth team.
In the Cardiff game Abergavenny played strongly throughout, with Tom McGlynn and Mitch Heffernan in midfield working particularly hard to launch Abergavenny attacks, with Fergus Allen and Alex McGlynn in attack running the Cardiff defence ragged as they pushed to score.
Abergavenny scored finally following stern defence by Ricky McGlynn, who then hit a firm ball up the pitch to Fergus Allen who ran onto the ball to score.
In their second match Abergavenny took advantage of Whitchurch's lack of organisation to put together a team performance which was probably their best of the season.
It was Fergus Allen who opened the scoring in the first half, and Alex McGlynn's spectacular scoop shot in the second half secured a 2-0 win. Llanishen/Caerphilly proved strong opposition, as Abergavenny began to tire. Abergavenny still managed to win with goals from Mitch Heffernan and Tom McGlynn.
Abergavenny then faced Penarth who had put nine goals past Cardiff and seven past Llanishen/Caerphilly. Knowing it was going to be tough, Abergavenny dug deep and every player including defenders Matthew Charles, Ricky McGlynn and goalkeeper William Allen put in tackles to keep Penarth at bay.
Even with this dogged defence Abergavenny conceded one goal in the first half and two in the second to give Penarth a 3-0 win, this was no disgrace as Penarth acknowledged they had had a tough game.
The Abergavenny Under 11 team continue to improve and will give more teams a shock when they reach their true potential.
