Members of Kyoshin Shotokan Karate Club, based at Caldicot Leisure Centre, travelled to North Wales last Saturday to take part in the Celyn Shotokan Karate Open Championships and had every reason to be feel very pleased with themselves at the end of the day, coming home with nine cups to show for their efforts.
Victoria Roberts-Burt, in her first season as a senior, did extremely well to win the adult individual kata competition, Kelly Raggett won the girls (under 5ft 3ins) kumite competition and Kate Mills received a cup for being joint third in the girls (5ft 3ins & over) kumite event. Phillip Roberts-Burt also put on a very good display to reach the semi-final of the children's individual kata event.
However, it was in the team events that the girls really showed their skill with Kelly Raggett, Lauren Raggett and Kate Mills winning the junior title by a clear margin. Kelly and Kate then joined Victoria to form a team in the adult team kata event where they outshone the much older and more experienced opposition, winning the competition in style and by 9 points from their nearest rivals.
