EAST met west as the cast of The King and I took to the stage for the opening night of the world-famous musical at the Borough Theatre, Abergavenny.
An outstanding cast, made up of the junior section of Abergavenny amateur dramatics society, gave a strong performance of this timeless love story set in 1860s Bangkok.
The production transports its audience to the far east and tells the love story of an English Governess, Anna, (played by Catrina Simpson) who is hired to teach the King of Siam's (Harvey Daniell) children.
Leading lady, Catrina Simpson, gave a first class performance and stunned the audience with an amazing voice alongside Harvey Daniell who was brilliantly cast as The King. Daniell and Simpson had a terrific on-stage chemistry and executed well-timed humour.
Supporting cast members Harry Jones (Prince Chululongkorn), Tommy Mogford (Louis Leonowens), Georgina Jones (a strong supporting Lady Thiang) and Chenise Taylor (The Kralahome) all put in strong performances and credit must also be paid to the wives, dancers and fantastic children.
Along with a talented orchestra they performed Rodger's & Hammerstein's classic's such as Shall We Dance and Getting to Know You.
Behind the scenes are musical director and choreographer, Jaci Brickley-Clarke, Barrie Jackson, producer, Ken Williams, stage manager and Robert Wade, accompanist.
Lavish costumes, thrilling choreography, singing and impressive sets, make this a feel-good musical suitable for all the family.
The King and I runs until November 19. Tickets £8. Call the box office on 01873 850805.
