MARDY Juniors football club cancelled their full programme of fixtures last weekend as a mark of respect to one of their most-loved officers, who died on Friday morning.
Sue Turner, 45, passed away after suffering from terminal cancer for two years.
Throughout that period she had remained active in the running of the club as secretary until being succeeded by Karen Passariellio in September. Mrs Passariellio said this week: "We've had lots of messages from other clubs saying how much Sue was loved.
"Garden City, who several of our sides were scheduled to play, have been especially understanding and supportive."
Of Mardy Juniors' six games on Sunday, four had been against teams from Garden City.
The under 9s were due to meet Caldicot Town and the home fixture with Undy was also called-off.
East Gwent Junior League secretary Wally Wenzel confirmed the fixtures would be re-arranged for later in the season.
Sue, of Holyhead Crescent, shared some of her secretarial work with husband Ian - both of them having become involved with the club through their 14-year-old son Robert, who plays for Magor's under-14s squad. Sue also leaves a daughter, Kate, who will be 18 next month.
Of Sue's commitment to the club, husband Ian, 43, said: "Nigel Casson had been the secretary for many years but when he hung up his boots Sue stepped up, true to form.
"There were never any obstacles in her life and she did everything she could for Mardy."
And family friend Karen Lawrence added: "I'd known Sue since we went to school together but we really became close through the football club as my son plays for Mardy as well.
"Sue did a myriad of things for the club and never looked for thanks or praise."
Sue's funeral takes place on Friday at 2.30pm at St Mary's Church in Abergavenny.
Instead of flowers, visitors are asked to make a donation towards a new unit at the Velindre Hospital in Cardiff.
