LOCAL Police have launched 'Operation Gabriel' - an initiative to target problematic alcohol misuse and underage drinking in Monmouth-shire over the festive season.
Under-18s and binge drinkers are being sought out in the scheme, implemented in conjunction with the regional Alcohol Misuse Enforcement Campaign, which incorporates all of Gwent.
'Operation Gabriel' began last week and will run throughout the Christmas period up until January 3.
Local police are targeting each of the aspects of alcohol misuse - prevention, education and enforcement - and are as such working in partnership with Trading Standards, Monmouth-shire County Council's Licensing Departments, the Gwent Alcohol Project, Youth Offending Teams, Community Safety Action Teams and the award winning Monmouth Pub-watch.
Extra officers patrolling and targeting all known hot spot areas for underage and binge drinkers and any youths found in possession of alcohol, will have it seized.
People who are drunk and disorderly or committing public order offences will be arrested and possibly given a £80 fixed penalty notice.
Posters and beer mats have been distributed to licensed premises to remind members of the public not to drink to excess and the possibility of being fined. Meanwhile, Spika Stoppas are being circulated in the area to minimise the risks of drinks being spiked.
Visits to licensed premises will be made to ensure licensees are running their establishments according to the licensing legislation.
Chief Inspector Bill Fitzpatrick, Uniform Operations, B Division said: "Operation Gabriel will target incidents of alcohol misuse so that law-abiding members of the public can enjoy their Christmas celebrations without interference.
"Furthermore, it is well known that many incidents of violent behaviour stem from excessive alcohol consumption.
"It is important therefore that we deal positively and early with those whose conduct affects the quality of life of others.
"In working closely with partner agencies we will ensure that we approach the problem from as wide a perspective as possible."
County Councillor Chris Woodhouse: said: "I commend this operation as a key means of reducing alcohol abuse within Monmouthshire.
"The concerted action carried out on a multi-agency basis will do much to reduce offences, particularly on the part of younger people, who are especially prone to binge drinking.
"The campaign will do much to ensure that we all have a peaceful festive season and ensure that a responsible attitude to drinking is encouraged."
