THREE young Rogiet stars have been tagged as potential British representatives at the London 2012 Olympics by a local councillor highlighting the wealth of sporting talent in the town.

The respective achievements of Philip Cochrane and Alex Jukes, both 11, and 17-year-old Edward Harry have been praised by Cllr Gerald Robbins. And he says the community should be collectively proud of its young achievers, who are all making a name for themselves - and the town - in their chosen disciplines.

Cllr Robbins hopes each youngster's successes will inspire more to take up sport. He said: "We already have the Rogiet Juniors football club and a woman is hoping to set up a netball club soon. We also have the playschemes initiative, which helps keep youngsters healthy and involved in sport.

"We're proud and lucky to have these young stars in Rogiet. We have always supported sport in this community and the new sports pavilion is testament to that."

All three youngsters could now follow in the footsteps of 26-year-old bobsledder Dan Humphries after the RAF technician, also from Rogiet, was selected for the UK squad training for next year's Winter Olympics. Having first rode on a bobsleigh less than three years ago, Humphries attended an international tobogganing training school in Austria before going on to compete in the British Championships the World Cup in both the two-and four-man events.

He said: "The bobsleigh event is something that I've always wanted to do. Even as a child I watched it on television and really thought that it's something I'd love to try."
