The Lombard Revival Rally passed through Wales over the weekend. Staring form Oxford last Thursday, the rally tackled stages at Silverstone, the Forest of Dean, Epynt, Sweet Lamb and many more famous rally stages, writes John Kendrick.
The event used the Epynt ranges on Sunday morning, with route 60 and the Burmah road particularly treacherous, with sheets of ice waiting to catch out the unwary.
The Lombard Revival was for cars of up to 1400cc and the entry was mainly made up of Vauxhall Corsas, Peugeot 106s and 205s and Rovers. An interesting entry was a Mini Cooper, co-driven by veteran Willy Cave. Complete with a roof rack stacked with tyres.
No results were available Sunday night.
Richard Burns, World Rally Champion rally driver in 2001, has died aged 34 after a long illness. When driving his road car from London to Cardiff in 2003, Richard collapsed near Newport. He was later diagnosed with a brain tumour. He was runner-up in the world championship in 1999 and 2000, before finally becoming the first Englishman to win the title in 2001.
Richard was a true character who is sadly missed in the WRC.
