JODIE Scarr, a pupil at Haberdashers' Monmouth School for Girls, has been selected to fence epee for Wales in the inaugural Junior Commonwealth Championships, to be held in Chennai, India, from January 24-29.

The 15-year-old, pictured above, has been fencing internationally for Wales since she was 12, in under-16 and under-18 age groups in home internationals.

This year she also won the Welsh under-16 qualifier for the British Youth Championship finals.

She initially started fencing when she competed in modern pentathlon - five-events which also include shooting, swimming, running and riding - and now her ambition is to be a contender for the 2012 London Olympics squad.

A spokesman for HMSG said: "We wish her every success."
