The two junior girls' teams at St John's-on-the-Hill have both enjoyed success at inter-school hockey tournaments recently.

The youngest squad of U9 girls travelled to Millfield School, in Somerset, to compete in their first-ever tournament, the prestigious Invitation Hockey event.

Twelve teams took part, including Wells Cathedral School, All Hallows School and The Paragon School.

The St John's girls battled hard in their first five matches to secure a place in the semi-final of the tournament, where some excellent goal-keeping skill and work in defence held Taunton School back by 1-0.

Facing The Downs School, Wraxall in the final was a daunting challenge but the girls played a well-paced game to defeat their opponents 2-1.

Returning home with the much coveted Millfield trophy the St John's girls were exhausted but triumphant.

The U10 girls have enjoyed a cracking hockey season so far, winning the majority of their fixtures.

The recent Severnside tournament which was held at Wycliffe College, in Stroud, saw them drawn against two strong contenders for the title, The Downs School, Wraxall and Beaudesert School, Minchinhampton.

In a series of gruelling matches played in arctic temperatures, the girls worked hard and played some fine hockey to win the tournament in style.

"It was a fantastic achievement from two young teams, all the girls are to be congratulated for their perseverance, exceptional effort and hard work," said their Games Teacher, Mrs Amanda Phillips.
