CAERWENT Juniors have launched an emotional appeal for more under-12s to join their footballing ranks, or else the cup semi-finalists may struggle to field a team.
Caerwent JFC compete in the East Gwent Junior League but have found themselves short of numbers for certain games as their girls are ineligible under league rules. Now under-12s coach Steve Jones says he is forced into recruiting more boys from Caerwent, Shirenewton, Caldicot and surrounding areas.
He said this week: "We desperately need more players. We are in the semi-final of the cup but many of our players are girls who are ineligible to play in competitive games."
He adds: "Our emphasis is on enjoying our football and having fun." The club plays both competitive and friendly games across East Gwent on Sunday mornings, with training on Friday evenings at 6.30pm at Caldicot Leisure Centre.
Concerned parent David Conwell said: "The boys love their football and, as parents it is great to see them running around having fun with their friends instead of being stuck in front of the TV or computer. Of course we welcome parental involvement but if getting kids to and from training is a problem sometimes we can arrange lifts."
David Pearce has both a son and daughter with the club. He explains: "The rules in respect of girls playing are unclear and we are seeking urgent formal clarification. In the meantime, we all want the team to continue and the kids are getting out trying to recruit more players."
l Parents or aspiring boys can contact Steve Jones on 01291 420529 for more information, or turn up to training at the astroturf pitch on Fridays.
