BORDERERS played host to Premier Division opponents New Tredegar on Friday night, emerging from the enthralling 11-try encounter victorious by four points.
The Chepstow and Caldicot boys were 7-0 up inside two minutes. Inside centre Dan Chiu took up possession just inside Tredegar's half, before using a combination of strength and speed on a solitary run to touch down under the posts for the first of his three tries. The remainder of the half proved to be a tit-for-tat affair with the sides exchanging try for try, but Borderers led 19-15, thanks to two Chiu converted efforts and a five-pointer from outside centre Kyle Deakin.
Within five minutes of the re-start, Tredegar took the lead for the first and only time in the game with their fourth unconverted try of the night, to give the visitors the narrowest of margins.
This only served to spur on Borderers and with second row Elliot Hussey jumping out of his skin, a source of good possession was assured. But the game lost its way somewhat, with some heated exchanges between the sides leading to the sin-binning of two Borderers players and a red card to New Tredegar.
Borderers soon returned to their flowing play, with prop, Ryan Beddows setting off an another try-scoring run. Collecting the ball at midfield, he sold an outrageous trademark dummy to the visiting backs, deftly chipped over the oncoming fullback, collected the loose ball and touched down in the corner.
A David Bishop penalty added to the hosts' lead before New Tredegar scored their fifth try, to take them within three points of Borderers, before bringing on a beefier centre to sure up the defence.
But the game was sealed when the marauding Chiu forced his way through for his third, converted by Ashley Young.
Borderers travel to Penarth in a friendly fixture this Saturday. The coach will leave Caldicot at 12pm and Chepstow at 12.30pm. Training this week is at Chepstow, at 7pm.
