THERE has been a lot of interest shown in the plans for the redevelopment of the Abergavenny Cattle Market site.

Hundreds of people have visited the one-stop shop where the full plans are available, and George Ashworth, head of planning for Monmouthshire County Council, has been asked to speak to Abergavenny Chamber of Trade and the town council next month.

He said there had been some significant changes in the final plans submitted by Henry Boot Development Company, most noticeably in the design of the non-food retail unit on the corner of Priory Lane and Lion Street.

The scheme has 373 car parking spaces, of which 181 will be underground. The plan shows 115 of these are next to the Asda store and 22 in front of the new library and cinema.

The flats have 55 car parking spaces and face Priory Lane, opposite the row of terraced houses which front King Street.

The scheme not only includes the Asda foodstore, but also a George clothing store and another larger retail unit.

Helpful views expressed on the draft plans, which were first put on display last September have been incorporated into the redesign by Henry Boot Developments Limited.

The library and cinema building will, with reclaimed stone, reflect the former slaughterhouse and integrate better with the rest of the scheme having curved rooflines and feature glazing.

The Asda building has been designed to reflect the character of the surrounding landscape.

The residential units will be built from a mixture of traditional stone and render so they are in keeping with other housing in Abergavenny.

Craig Mathias of Henry Boot Developments said: "We have listened to responses to the original scheme and acted on ideas. The application is for a scheme reflecting the character of Abergavenny."
