SIX years after joining Monmouth School as Head of Rugby, former Wales international John Bevan has revealed he is still impressed with the levels of commitment from staff and pupils alike.

Bevan took up his post in 2000, having been the WFU's director of coaching since 1997. As a player, he scored a record 17 tries in the 1971 British Lions tour of New Zealand.

His style of developing a broad base of talent from which to pick the next generation of international stars means focusing attention on the younger teams.

He said: "I want people to enjoy the sport, and I have always paid careful attention to all aspects of the game."

"I am impressed by the first class indoor and outdoor sporting facilities at the School. We have floodlit astro-pitches, winter evening training areas and all the teachers are qualified coaches or referees."

Since his arrival, Bevan has helped develop an off-the-pitch training programme, incorporating weights and circuit training as well as ball skills.

Former pupils include Welsh rugby greats Keith Jarrett and Eddie Butler. More recently, Richard Parks joined the Dragons; Wayne Barnes joined the elite team of referees while Tom Blampied, Tim Foister, Will Kershaw-Naylor and Lawrence Price are all rising stars.

Now Bevan continues this tradition through his search for the next students to propel onto the international stage.
