Cllr Peter Fox, cabinet member for lifelong learning has given a new excuse for not being able to walk the proposed safe route to Chepstow Comprehensive School.
After an angry mother gave him the challenge for a second time, he said that he knew the area like the back of his hand so he did not see any reason for doing it.
He also said he had a sore ankle which would stop him doing it anyway. However Cllr Armand Watts was not prepared to let Mr Fox off so easily. He said: "I won't believe he has got a sore ankle until he gives me a sick note from his mum."
The Free Press last week challenged the councillor to do the walk with the equivalent weight in books, musical instruments, cookery items and PE kit that an 11-year-old would be expected to carry. We also suggested it should be done in the rain, after dusk, as children will have to do in winter. Mr Fox turned down this initial challenge as he insisted: "I am elected to represent people and will not be ridiculed.
"Policy is policy, if we deviate from it we will have to provide free transport to all children in the county."
