At the February meeting of Usk Town Council, members looked at several areas of the town which are giving rise to concern. Cllr Jill Jeremiah queried the poor state of the fencing around the Owain Glendwyr field in Maryport Street saying, "as a town committed to producing excellent floral displays which encourage both tourism and prosperity, we should be actively seeking to improve such areas which let the town down."
Agreeing with Cllr Jeremiah, Cllr Dave Rennels expressed further concern over the condition of the Maryport Street car park beside the Memorial Hall. "There are some very deep potholes there now, which are not only bad news for vehicles, but are dangerous for pedestrians using the hall, especially the elderly and infirm," he said. It was felt that the County Council would not look at re-surfacing the area whilst the argument over car parking charges continues, but Cllr Alec Leathwood insisted that the County Council be approached to undertake remedial works as it would be liable should anyone be injured as a direct result of the poor surface.
Concern was also expressed about the effect on nearby residents of very bright illuminated signs outside the One Stop grocery shop in Maryport Street, because the signs stay on all night. The store is owned by Tesco and it was agreed that the company should be contacted and invited to a site meeting.
