CHARITABLE students at a local school used the American game of Dodgeball to raise money for Childlife.
Teams comprising of the male and female staff at Haberdashers' Monmouth School for Girls played against each other in a hard-fought Dodgeball match, organised by Jo Jackson and head girl Alice Beech. Cheered on by a very partisan crowd of girls, who had each paid £1 to watch, the staff demonstrated their skill and manoeuvrability to a greater, or lesser, degree.
This unusual match was the latest way in which the school raised money for good causes and it proved to be a huge success.
It was difficult to determine the actual winners of the match, the referee declared the female staff the winners by 3 points to 2, but the real winner was Childlife - with £153 being raised.
Childlife began raising funds in 1993, initially to administer payroll-giving donations for the four charities. Since then, over £2,225,000 has been raised by people making donations, which will be split between four charities that help children - The National Deaf Children's Society, the National Children's Bureau, Ataxia UK and Acorns Children's Hospice.
