Lisa Buffin of Caldicot Judo Club took a well deserved gold medal at the prestigious North West Age Banded Judo Champion-ships in St Helens last weekend.
The event is one of the few competitions during the year that is used as an appraisal event for young players wishing to be considered for the British Junior Judo Squad later in the year and attracted players from across the whole of the UK.
Fighting in the young ladies under 52kg class Lisa took gold by winning all three of her fights by taking her opponents to the ground and holding them down for the required period of time. The result was particularly pleasing given that Lisa had previously never beaten two of her opponents.
Also fighting on the day, from Caldicot, were Chris Sage in the under 60kg class and Matthew Damsell in the under 50kg class. Both players fought well against tough opposition but were unsuccessful in taking medals. All three players are now preparing themselves for the Welsh Championships in April.
Caldicot Judo Club is about to commence another beginners course for juniors (8-16) as well as adults. Call 01291 424755 or 421829.
