MORE than 100 jobs are being axed at a supermarket distribution depot in Chepstow.

Workers at the Asda depot just off the M4 have been waiting since last November to find out about their futures after the announcement of imminent cutbacks as the supermarket chain reviewed its distribution network.

A three-month consultation was carried out and employees faced an agonising wait to see who out of the 200 staff at the depot would keep their jobs.

Workers were called in for one-to-one meetings with managers at the end of last week and told who was being laid off.

Jason Jordan, 33, is one of 146 workers to lose their jobs.

Mr Jordan, from Bettws in Newport, who has worked at the company for two years, knew his position was at risk.

He said: "I knew redundancy was a possibility, but I didn't know until my shift last Sunday night that I would be going.

"It was a real shock. I have a wife and three young children to support and the job market is really tight at the moment. I've had no luck finding anything so far, and it has been devastating."

Mr Jordan says a points system, based on factors like attendance and the number of sick days taken, was used to calculate who would go and who would say.

He now faces a worrying time, with Andy-Lee, nine, Ben, eight, and Ashley, four, to support while he looks for work.

A spokesman for Asda said that of the 146 redundancies, 75 were voluntary, adding: "Employees were informed last week between Sunday and Thursday, after the consultation period ended on February 18."
