Pentwyn Dynamos 1 Goytre 1
MID-TABLE Goytre travelled to high-flying Pentwyn Dynamos on Saturday with chairman Paul Greenhalgh admitting before kick-off he would be delighted with a point.
But team manager and birthday boy Steve Morgan opted for an attacking 4-3-3 formation - which not only signalled his intent but delivered the draw few had expected Goytre would muster, having lost every game since January.
After the full-time whistle, Greenhalgh said: "I was surprised when Steve went for that formation. But it allowed us to have Graham Mason, Kevin Berry and Simon Ritter all on the bench so we could bring on very strong subs if we needed them and that's what we've been lacking recently. "As it was, the boys played well even though the pitch was like Barry Island and not very ideal for playing good football.
"Their first goal came because of that. Ryan Mackernass was ready to save a half-shot but it hit the ground and shot up into the air.
"He's tried to dive on it but their striker has popped up to take both him and the ball to slot it into the net. I thought we were a bit unfortunate to be behind."
Goytre, now a goal down midway through the half, responded well with Kevin Wallace outstanding in the middle three. He was instrumental in the equaliser, rushing forward and combining with Mark Langford to set up Joe Carlos for the goal.
Greenhalgh added: "We had the better of the second half really but didn't create anything. We had a couple of chances from set pieces but both defences were on top."
Goytre next travel to Cambrian & Clydach, where another point would be seen as a good result. Morgan's men are still only four points above the drop zone with Greenhalgh concerned that any of the teams below could pick up points.
He said: "After Cambrian & Clydach we've got three games against those bottom sides but right now we're just focusing on Saturday."
