Rogue traders have been caught trying to sell imitation designer watches to shoppers in Cwmbran, claiming they are worth hundreds of pounds, writes Stephen Ware.
Torfaen trading standards are warning consumers to be on the lookout for opportunist traders selling "Claude Valentini" watches after two people were stopped in Cwmbran town centre.
They claimed to be selling expensive designer watches at a knock-down price but in fact the watches had only a simple quartz movement that costs just pence to produce.
One salesman was trying to sell a watch for about £30 claiming it was worth up to ten times as much.
Steve Whitehouse, Torfaen Trading Standards, said: "The people at the front end are committing offences under the Consumer Protection Act and the Theft Act.
"Our advice is that if you are considering purchasing a watch then you should visit a reputable trader where you can exercise your consumer rights."
