AN ABERSYCHAN school choir has more than one reason to sing out loud and proud, writes Andy Downie.

Victoria Primary School children are the only choir in Torfaen to be invited to sing in Cardiff this Christmas - and they've also got a CD coming out. The choir, made up of children from Years 3 to 6 will be performing at St David's Hall in the capital on Saturday, December 17 in the Carols for Christmas concert.

Before that, the choir has two dates to entertain; Merchant's Hill Baptist Church on December 9, starting at 7pm and the following night, Saturday 10, at Pontnewynydd Community Hall, again starting at 7pm.

"The choir have such lovely voices," said Victoria's head teacher Joy Dando.

The children are also excited about their forthcoming CD, which was recorded in the school hall. "All the surrounding classrooms were on their best 'quiet' behaviour," said Ms Dando.

"It gave them a real insight into how things would be done in a real music studio."

The CD, which will cost £10, was made by Sonic Works ltd, and featured the choir as well as two clarinetists and an electrical guitarist (Matthew Wells, who plays in the band Five-Wheel Drive).

The school decided to make the CD in memory of Chris Bloomfield, former chair of school governors and lay preacher for St Thomas. Mr Bloomfield was a tireless worker for many years before his recent untimely death.

"The CD's artwork was all designed by the children and should prove to be a popular stocking filler. Some parents have ordered six or seven a time," revealed Ms Dando.
