GOYTRE were inconsolable after going down 1-0 at home to Welsh League Division Three strugglers Chepstow, having done everything but score before a late winner sucker-punched them.
Goytre had 16 corners in the game, hit the woodwork twice and had another effort cleared off the line before the late winner from the visitors. Chepstow meanwhile, under the guidance of Wayne Samuals after parting company with boss Chris Lillygreen days before the game, were relentlessly on the back foot but were rewarded for their doggedness.
Goytre club chairman Paul Greenhalgh said: "It was very disappointing - we could have won by six, seven or eight nil. We'd beaten Treowen 3-0 the previous week and we were all over Chepstow this time but didn't have the killer instinct."
And he added that team manager Steve Morgan was "gutted" at the final whistle, having watched his side control the game so much but end up losing it.
The home side should have known it was not to be their day when veteran striker Mark Langford pulled up with a hamstring injury during the warm up. But the patched side still had plenty of opportunities to win the tie, but for the heroics of Rob Moore.
Simon Ritter was the first to be denied after the full back got behind the defence, then Kevin Berry was sent clear by Kevin Wallace only for Moore to pull off a fine double save to keep the scoresheet blank. And Chepstow's defence continued to hold firm until half time, with Kelvin Grimes and Graham Mason the next to fail to break the deadlock.
The pattern of play continued after the interval, Steve Collett and Geoff Howells both hitting the bar from distance, while Wallace saw his header cleared off the line.
Greenhalgh and Morgan were both then left stunned as, with eight minutes to go, Dominic Jones/Connor ran on to a long ball from Dean Taylor, and slotted past Ryan Mackernass.
Goytre will be looking to return to form when they visit Ystradgynlais this Saturday.
