THORNWELL crashed out of the Gill Cup in the quarter finals on Sunday, losing 5-1 at home to Monmouth Town's third team.
The home side got off to an astonishing start, with Kenny Vidler and Tony Reynolds both missing a handful of opportunities kill the Kingfishers off. But Monmouth saw out the purple patch and emerged to totally outclass their hosts, with Thornwell adding later that Town had deserved the win and wishing their opponents luck in the final four.
Vidler did get his name on the scoresheet, but a brace for both Ford and James Shore saw Monmouth go through, with Baldwin grabbing the fifth. l East Gwent League Division Two champions elect Chepstow Athletic hoped to book a place in a third cup semi-final on Saturday, but crashed out to local rivals Undy.
Undy, who have struggled in Division One this term, led 3-2 at half time, with Chris Hooper and Jamie Goddard netting for Athletic. The score remained 3-2 up until the final whistle, signalling a return to form for Undy, who appeared to want the victory more on the day.
But Chepstow Athletic still remain on course for a treble, having already progressed to the semi-finals of both the Argus Shield and the Benevolent Cup, as well as topping Division Two.
l In the other quarter-final ties, Portskewett and Rockfield drew 2-2; while Underwood eased past Monmouth A 4-1.
