The RSPCA is appealing for information after six dogs were found abandoned in the Usk area.

The five Shih-tzus and a basset hound were spotted in fenced derelict land by a member of the public on New Year's Eve in West Road, Monkswood. The land was full of discarded rubbish and it is likely that the animals were deliberately dumped. There was no sign of food, shelter, water or warmth for the dogs. One of the Shih-tzus had collapsed, while the skins of the other four was so matted that they were all bleeding. Their claws were growing into the pads of their feet and below the matting fur were numerous cuts and scabs.

The dogs also smelt overpoweringly of urine and what was described as a "rotting" smell. None of the dogs were microchipped or had collars and the RSPCA has no information where they came from or who put them there.

The basset hound and one of the Shih-tzus were collected by the dog warden. The other Shih-tzus, however, were severely underweight, had conjunctivitis and needed urgent veterinary attention.

RSPCA inspector Emma Smith said: "These vulnerable animals were dumped in bitterly cold conditions with a complete disregard for their welfare.

"Such cruelty beggars belief and I would urge anyone who knows anything about this incident to contact me urgently."
