MONMOUTHSHIRE'S rate of recycling and composting has improved, climbing from 41 per cent to 48 per cent.
However the county still has a way to go to meet the Welsh Assembly's statutory target of 52 per cent of all domestic and commercial waste being reused, recycled or composted by 2012-13.
All councils could face fines of £200 per tonne if they do not meet 2012-13's statutory target.
Previously, Paul Matthews, has praised residents for making the area one of the top recycling performers in Wales.
At a Severnside meeting, the Monmouthshire council chief executive said the success of the recycling was down to the behavioural changes of residents, and that the increase in its target was expected to be around 53 per cent by the end of the year.
