ST Arvans Parish Church officially launched its Friends of St Arvans Parish Church recently, an initiative set up by the resident vicar, Father Michael Gollop, and members of the church to help preserve the historic building.
The church, which has remained a place of worship and prayer in the village for over 1000 years, has a rich history and is dedicated to St Arvan, a 9th century hermit who supported himself by fishing for Salmon in the River Wye. It was enlarged between 1813-1823, with money raised between the parish, the Duke of Beaufort, Nathaniel Wells of Piecefield Park ( now Chepstow Racecourse), and further extensive restoration work was carried out in the early 1900s.
The aim of Friends of St Arvans Parish Church is to encourage all who have any form of connection with the church - whether it be those who live in the parish, have family ties there, or have simply been touched by a visit to the church - to help contribute towards its preservation. Contributions will go towards maintaining the fabric of the church, replacing major items, and helping towards renovation. A friend will not be expected to provide funds towards general housekeeping, such as heating, lighting etc as these will be borne by the worshipping community.
