CHEPSTOW Police Sports Day finally went ahead recently after it was postponed last month due to bad weather.
The host for this year's event was Trellech Primary School, with teams from primary schools: Shirenewton, The Dell, Pembroke, St Mary's RC, Llandogo, and last year's winners Thornwell, all competing for the winning shield. Competition was fierce and all the teams put in an impressive effort, but in the end it was The Dell that took the winning title, with the Dragon Sports Fair play trophy going to LLandogo for their sterling effort.
Trellech Primary School's Head of PE, Jane Foster, said: "The event was a great success and all the children really enjoyed themselves. A lot of parents from Trellech and the other schools came to watch and show their support. We are really pleased that the event was able to go ahead."
Chepstow Police officers have been running the event since 1996, which has proved a popular and well-anticipated part of each primary school's annual event marker.
However, the event almost didn't go ahead at all this year, as financial pressures and a lack of funding after long-term sponsor, Asda, pulled out citing it could no longer afford to contribute, left the future of the initiative looking bleak.
But thanks to the determination of a number of officers, including PC Louise Thorpe, who was in charge of organising this year's event, funding was secured through generous contributions from Chepstow Town Council, CSAT, and Monmouthshire Housing association.
