THOUSANDS of people turned out for the Cwmbran Big Event finale at the town's boating lake on Saturday, as a week of cultural and sporting activities drew to a close.

Despite the showers, more than 5,000 people came to mark the end of seven days celebrating Cwmbran's physical and cultural life.

The finale was kicked off by former Big Brother winner Rachel Rice and writer and comedian Steve Parry - both from Cwmbran - on the main stage at the boating lake.

The day included musical performances from five local schools, Nidus choir and Nidus touch dance group, as well as Mayhem Rappers, Cwmbran Brass Band, Dancerellas and Dance Stars.

Visitors also had the chance to wander around numerous stalls, or take part in activities including golf and fishing tuition, a tug-o-war, boxercise, raft racing, a mini petting zoo, and sailing.

Compere former Big Brother winner Rachel Rice, who lives in Cwmbran and now teaches performing arts at Abersychan Comprehensive, said: "It's nice to see everyone from the area coming together.

"The schools have got involved, everyone's come out for a good day and it's great for the whole community."

Laura Lewis, from Greenmeadow, Cwmbran, came to the Big Event with her 12-year-old daughter Kate Watkins.

They were watching her younger daughter Rachel, 11, perform musical number Electricity alongside her classmates from Blenheim Road Primary School.

Ms Lewis, 43, said: "They've been rehearsing for quite a few weeks, so they were looking forward to it. I've been to watch her dance before, but this is the big one."

Tony and Bethan Moore, from Pontnewydd, were at the event with their two-year-old daughter Callie.

Mr Moore, 29, said: "It's good to have something like this for Cwmbran - it brings everyone out and gives the kids a great place to perform."
