PONTYPOOL RFC have bolstered their wing options after completing a double swoop from Indigo Premiership runners-up Newport RFC.
Deon Smith and Matthew Powell have become the second and third additions to Pontypool Park ahead of the new season, after scrum half Dan Babos joined from Dragons RFC on Monday.
Smith has Premiership experience under his belt, featuring 10 times for the Black and Ambers, and seven times for Bedwas RFC during their stint in the top flight – scoring two tries.
The 22-year-old is a local lad, beginning his career at Pontypool United RFC, and has featured for the Wales Under-18s and Under-20s – where he scored a late winner against England in the 2019 Under-20s Six Nations.
Smith, who can also operate at centre, said: “Being a local boy I’ve watched a lot of rugby at the park growing up.
“Now I’m looking forward to the chance to get on there myself.”
Newly-appointed backs coach Shaun Connor said he is excited to work with the former Dragons Academy star.
“He is an excellent addition to the squad,” he said.
“I am looking forward to seeing him challenge for a starting spot in a position where we have depth."
Powell is returning to Pontypool Park after featuring at the end of last season – starting in the win over Cardiff Met RFC on the final day.
Also starting out at Pontypool United, Powell has gone on to feature for Cross Keys, Cardiff RFC, and then Newport – where he scored seven tries in 13 games.
“I’m really excited to have signed for my home town club,” said the 27-year-old.
“I cannot wait to get started with a massive season and a chance of promotion.”
Defence coach Andrew Quick said Pooler had been tracking Powell for some time, and he was pleased to have finally secured his signature.
“We are finally delighted to welcome Mathew Powell to Pontypool RFC, it has taken a few years to ensure his talent is applied to his home town, we are so pleased to see him come on board,” he said.
“As a club we always look to develop and recruit the best local players and to finally get Mathew here after plying his trade for other top outfits is a real coup.
“Being a local lad he already comes with established relationships within the squad and I look forward to watching him forge great combinations on the field.
“He has shown through his playing career he is a top-end finisher of tries, he’s hitting his peak years and will offer a great deal to this group of players.”
The two new signings will compete with Marcus Jones, Amosa Nove and Duan Thomas for a place starting on the flanks.
