The action is heating up in the South Wales Premier League with Division 2 teams Abergavenny and Chepstow taking centre stage this week.
Abergavenny are currently placed second in the promotion race while Chepstow are in the eighth place, just a notch above Port Talbot Town and Dafen Welfare.
With August offering five more match days, every game carries with it the immense pressure of a must-win situation for these clubs.
Over in Division 1, Cardiff, having posted a formidable score of 295 for 3, secured a victory over Usk by 60 runs, despite the resistance offered by the latter’s players Harawal Ahmed Wassam, Freddie Wolfenden, and Ollie Rayner.
Switching back to Division 2, Abergavenny, batting first, set up a challenging total of 245 for 9, eventually proving to be advantageous towards the hosts.
The visitors from Ynysygerwn fell short by 64 runs with the last wicket falling in the 43rd over.
Abergavenny surely brought their A-game with solid performances by Nathan Davies, Josh Griffiths, Luke Martin, and Pawan Nisansala Peiris Lokukankanamage.
Chepstow's run in contrast was less than stellar as they fell to Penarth by 59 runs and now have to approach the upcoming matches as battles for survival. Penarth finished on 284 for 7 whilst Chepstow's reply was 225 for 9.
Persistent changes in the team line-up due to work commitments of captain Jason Dobbie and others have been disruptive, making their fight against relegation all the more arduous.
However, there is a saving grace for Chepstow. Port Talbot Town and Dafen Welfare, who are currently holding the relegation spots, are trailing with fewer points than the Mathern Road outfit.
Therefore, this Saturday's match could tip the scales significantly.
Abergavenny, a competent team, will face Dafen Welfare and a win could help Chepstow.
Meanwhile, Chepstow themselves will face Mumbles and Division 1 team Usk take on leaders St Fagans.
